France Ends Fiji's Olympic Rugby Sevens Dominance
Led by Antoine Dupont, France Captures Gold
Paris, France --
In a thrilling upset, France has defeated Fiji to win the gold medal in men's rugby sevens at the Tokyo Olympics. The victory marks an end to Fiji's dominance in the sport, as the Pacific island nation had won gold in every Olympic rugby sevens competition since the sport's debut in 2016.
France's victory was spearheaded by Antoine Dupont, who was named the tournament's best player. The scrum-half scored a try and set up another as France overcame a 12-7 halftime deficit to triumph 26-21.
Fiji had been the heavy favorites heading into the match, having won gold and run the table in every rugby sevens match at the Olympics since the sport debuted in 2016. However, France proved to be too strong on this day, with Dupont leading the charge.
