Argentina Wins 16th Copa America Title
Messi Injured, Watches From Sidelines
Martinez Scores Late Winner
Argentina won a record-breaking 16th Copa America title on Saturday, July 15, 2024, with a 1-0 victory over Colombia in the final. The match was delayed by more than an hour after Argentina's star player, Lionel Messi, suffered a leg injury in the first half.
Despite Messi's absence, Argentina controlled the game and created several scoring chances. Lautaro Martinez finally broke the deadlock in the 118th minute, heading home a cross from Angel Di Maria. Colombia pushed for an equalizer in the final minutes, but Argentina held on to secure the win.
The victory is Argentina's first Copa America title since 1993. It is also the first major international title for Lionel Scaloni, who took over as Argentina's coach in 2018.
